What is Binge Eating Disorder?

Binge Eating Disorder (BED) is characterized by recurrent episodes of consuming large amounts of food in a short time with a loss of control, without engaging in compensatory behaviors. It can lead to weight gain, obesity, and medical complications. Contributing factors may include genetics, psychological factors, and sociocultural influences. Treatment often involves psychological interventions, nutritional counseling, support groups, and sometimes medication for co-occurring conditions.

What Causes Binge Eating Disorder

Binge Eating Disorder (BED) likely results from a combination of genetic, psychological, and environmental factors. Key contributors may include genetic predisposition, emotional dysregulation, low self-esteem, trauma, sociocultural pressures, neurobiological imbalances, learned coping behaviors, and restrictive dieting. The complex interplay of these factors warrants further research to better understand BED’s causes.

How We Treat

Resilience DBT & Eating Recovery is a team of Outpatient Eating Disorder Therapists in New Jersey, Florida, and Maryland. Our therapists are ready and equipped with clinical services to provide healing.

At our treatment facility, we have licensed and trained professionals who have worked with patients of all ages, with a variety of eating and feeding concerns. This includes individuals struggling with ARFID, anorexia nervosa, bulimia nervosa, anxiety, depression, OCD, and trauma. We will work with the entire family to make sure everyone is educated about what can be done to help the individual struggling with ARFID. This ensures that the child is receiving the best care while in treatment as well as in their home environment.

We use a combination of individual therapy and family therapy for our ARFID treatment. Our therapists can pull from a variety of therapeutic approaches that work to address emotional dysregulation and other mental health concerns. This can include Dialectical Behavioral Therapy, Exposure Therapy, Cognitive Behavioral Therapy, Enhanced Cognitive Behavior Therapy, and Family-Based Treatment.

Struggling with any mental health concern can make your day-to-day life challenging. If you are a parent of a child who is struggling, you may feel overwhelmed daily. When it comes to ARFID treatment, there are trained professionals at Resilience DBT & Eating Recovery who can support you, and help you navigate the future.

Health Risks Associated With Binge Eating

Our Eating Recovery therapists employ individual and group therapy, along with educational sessions, for binge eating disorder treatment.

Health risks associated with Binge Eating Disorder (BED) can be both physical and psychological, including:

  • Weight gain & obesity: Binge eating may lead to significant weight gain, increasing obesity risk.
  • Type 2 diabetes: Obesity from BED raises the risk of developing insulin-resistant type 2 diabetes.
  • Cardiovascular disease: Obesity, high blood pressure, and high cholesterol linked to BED can heighten heart disease and stroke risk.
  • Gastrointestinal issues: Binge eating can result in digestive problems like acid reflux, constipation, or IBS.
  • Sleep apnea: BED-related obesity increases the risk of sleep apnea, marked by breathing pauses during sleep.
  • Joint & muscle pain: Excess weight strains joints and muscles, causing pain and reduced mobility.
  • Fatty liver disease: Fat accumulation in the liver may progress to liver inflammation, scarring, or failure.
  • Gallbladder disease: Obesity from BED raises the risk of gallbladder disease and gallstones, potentially necessitating surgery.
  • Psychological issues: BED can lead to depression, anxiety, low self-esteem, guilt, and shame, negatively affecting mental well-being and life quality.
  • Social isolation: BED may cause social isolation and relationship difficulties due to secretive binge eating behaviors and stigma.

Addressing and treating BED early can help reduce the severity of these health risks and improve an individual’s overall well-being.

FAMILY BASED TREATMENT (FBT)

Family-Based Treatment (FBT) stands as the gold standard for addressing eating disorders in children and adolescents, particularly for early-onset cases of anorexia, bulimia, and Avoidant Restrictive Food Intake Disorder (ARFID).

This well-researched approach places parents at the forefront of their child’s re-nourishment and weight restoration process. Eating disorder recovery can be achieved through this early intervention.

Cognitive Behavioral Therapy – Enhanced (CBT) is an ideal approach for older adolescents and adults struggling with eating disorders.

This evidenced-based approach is a powerful and effective treatment for anorexia nervosa, bulimia nervosa, binge-eating disorder, and other specified feeding or eating disorders (OSFED). CBT-E treatment sessions are time-limited, structured, and goal-oriented.

Dialectical Behavior Therapy for Eating Disorders (DBT-ED)

Dialectical Behavior Therapy for Eating Disorders is the method of choice for individuals who struggle with co-occurring mental health issues in addition to the eating disorder; such as depression, anxiety, suicidal ideation, or PTSD.
